Lacking time to work on your business

Do you sometimes get frustrated about working all hours and not having the time or mindset to work “on” your business to introduce the changes that will enable your business to grow to another level?

Your company is running at capacity.  You keep winning more work and your business is very stretched.

You can also see plenty of opportunities to develop new offerings and enter new markets.

However, you struggle to prepare your business for this growth because you are constantly running out of time: -

  • You feel you have to make all the decisions yourself.
  • You can’t delegate and “let go” without having to intervene later if something unexpected happens.
  • You have to deal with a myriad of trivial issues.
  • You spend too much time on tasks you do not enjoy.

In summary you no longer have the time to do what motivates you and what led you to set up your business in the first place.  This also affects your private life.

Imagine you could fix these problems, improve your work-life balance, and find the time to focus on what you enjoy and that no-one else can do in your place as the CEO.

Here are a few common tips to help you find time to work on your business:

  • Delegate tasks.  Identify responsibilities that don't require your direct input and can be delegated to other people.
  • Prioritise ruthlessly.  Make a list of tasks and prioritise what is truly urgent and important. Defer or delegate tasks that are less critical.
  • Block time on your calendar.  Schedule time for strategic thinking and planning.
  • Outsource what can be done more effectively outside your business.
  • Reduce the number and duration of meetings and be disciplined about start and end times.
  • Learn to say no.  Don't take on every task personally.  Decline or delegate requests that don't further strategic goals.
  • Take care of yourself.  Prioritise exercise and healthy eating habits.

These tips are common sense, but their implementation is not always easy and can be challenging when you are already so short of time.

I believe that CEOs can greatly benefit from the confidential support of an independent third party to bounce ideas, review the options, identify solutions and implement actions.

I help CEOs and Senior Executives of SMEs in the engineering and manufacturing sectors to introduce the changes required to grow their business.
